Film about a Caregiver in Singapore 媽 Mother | Project 20/20

Caregivers in Asia come from all walks of life, for many of us filial piety is a core culturally belief. When our parents are ill we have to stand by them and care for them. The process of caregiver however in this highly urbanised and capitalist world is proving to be increasing complex with the process of providing care but just one element of being a caregiver. In this film, the life, stressors, and hardship experienced by a caregiver is acknowledged. There are also more female caregivers than males in Asia, and women have been found to experience more stressors than men.

In Singapore, 95% of the elderly are living with their family (1). There are also more female caregivers than males in Asia, and women have been found to experience more stressors than men (1). Caregiving needs to be acknowledged and we need to work together as a community to provide our support to all the Caregivers out there and for them to know that they are not alone.

Preventing Dementia

Got to live stream the Preventing Dementia Media Launch and it was really awesome. I’m really hoping that more people will take up this course I really believe that it can make a difference. http://www.utas.edu.au/preventing-dementia

It’s like put together by a whole bunch of top universities and has Carol Bryne from Cambridge University. If you don’t know who Carol Bryne is, here’s her profile (http://www.iph.cam.ac.uk/about-us/key-people/carol-brayne/) her profile makes my mind explode. If I was like 10% her, I seriously will die happy.

Enjoy the video of the launch!

Dancing With Dementia

I remembered watching this episode of Dancing with Dementia by Jenny Brockie on SBS Australia last year and was so impressed that they had produced an episode to talk about dementia from the real “experts”. People living with dementia. Having people with dementia on the front line and talking about living with dementia, how they feel, their daily strategies, the emotional roller coasters, and the hardline issues that they face from society. A must see for everyone living, caring and working with people with dementia.

Law in Hawaii Keeps Elderly Couple in Separate Nursing Homes

Saw this article about the legal system in Hawaii and it has kept apart 95-year-old former Noboru Kawamoto, Elaine, age 88. The couple, married for 67 years have to live separately in different nursing homes as a result of the legal system. It pains me to see this happen, I can imagine being separated from my husband after living together for 67 years. It certainly shows the lack of care and understanding for the elderly and the rigidity of the health and social care system. It’s almost like it has never been considered or forgotten by the system.
